HISTORY OF THE MARYLAND VAN COUNCIL INC .
T he Maryland Van Council, INC. (MVC) had it’s beginning like most of the other Van Councils. In 1973, with the vans starting to gain popularity in the Maryland area, a few clubs had formed also there where a couple of local runs, but there was very little interclub communication. On Sunday, June 26, 1976, Brain Bowie organized and founded the Maryland Van Council, INC., at the "Third Eastern Van Nationals" presented by Mid-Atlantic Vans at the Cecil County Dragway. There were 11 clubs present. At the first meeting, after some basic guidelines were set up formal meeting was planned at a local bar. By the time we had our six-month anniversary we had grown to 26 clubs. In the late 70’s we organized events like an intra-Council softball league in 1978, 1979, and 1980, followed by a swap meet and picnic in 1980, 1981, and 1982, and van shows. We also did public service projects like collecting cigarette packs for dialysis treatment for kidney patients. In 1983, with vans starting to decline we decided to try to do something about it, and in 1984 we hosted our 1st " EASTERN VAN NATIONALS". We have hosted this event every year since. The most exciting time was when Hurricane Gloria paid us a visit. The Maryland Van Council was incorporated on November 7, 1983. The purpose of this organization is to bring established van clubs together to promote rapport, sharing of common interests, and discussion of mutual concerns and general promotion of vans in the communities in which we come in contact with through neighborly interchange.

Maryland Van Council Dedicates Eastern Van Nationals to Legendary Member – Jim McCleaf May 27, 2001 Jim McCleaf’s Life in Vanning
It all started in 1966 when Jim bought his first van, at that time there were no organized van clubs. When he saw a fellow vanner he would pull into the nearest parking lot and shoo the breeze. In 1977, he joined the TIDEWATER VANS and became really involved in vanning. When the TIDEWATER broke up he started the only U.S.VANS. In 1981, he was elected chairman of the MARYLAND VAN COUNCIL, INC., for the first time but had to resign because of health reasons. In 1983, he was again chosen to be chairman of the council and served as an office of one kind or another until his health started to decline. He was co-chairman of the TRUCK-IN in 1985 and served as chairman in 1986. He attended two NATIONALS and numerous others TRUCK-INS. He also served on the COUNCIL OF COUNCILS board, and served as co-chairman of the 21ST NATIONALS committee. Jim was active, dedicated, and supportive van member until his medical illness. Jim departed September 2000, as an honorary member of the MARYLAND VAN COUNCIL. In honor of Jim McCleaf, the MARYLAND VAN COUNCIL has established the JIM McCLEAF MEMORIAL AWARD: ‘BEST OF SHOW’ OVERALL, which will be presented for the first time this year’s EASTERN VAN NATIONALS.
